Cable modem hacking
« on: July 10, 2008, 10:33:22 PM »
Just wondering if anyone else here is into modem hacking? Once i found out how simple it was i wanted to kick myself for not getting into it sooner. Now i enjoy 30mbps download speeds for the small cost of basic cable ($15/mo with comcast). So far as i'm aware it also makes me a lot more anonymous on the internets, since my modems mac address isnt linked to any account on record...and if i want to i can even change the mac address.

I don't see what having a different mac address has to do with being anonymous if you're still using your own cable modem with your own IP address.

My hack is better than your hack.

Free cable.

Buy cable internet. Turn off your bill for cable T.V. (if allowed)

Voila.

Free cable.

But you pay for the internet.

I'm cool.

Yeah, with the company I work for, the internet price is about five bucks higher with no other services on the account. If you split the line from your cable modem, you'll get channels 2-22.

Im talking about changing the cable modems mac address. How else would they track down an IP address to a specific person?

yeah, in StL i just paid for internet...there was apparently a switch the cable guy had to flip to turn off the TV access from the internet, and he was too lazy to go up and switch it...and told me so.  voila...free cable.

You're a fucking idiot.

When the CMTS detects your modem, it uses one of two means of determine what user you are: your serial number or your MAC address. Upon connection, a modem ranges, locks on to a downstream and upstream frequency, and then using TFTP, it receives a QoS telling it what speed it is capable of. In the event that the MAC or serial is not registered, the accounting system either denies the range to be completed or the modem and any device behind it receives a private IP address, denying any outside routing.

Effectively, you're a terrible bullshitter.

In my case, they just put filters on the cable equivalent of a TNI box, but because I have satellite TV, they assumed that there was no need to apply them. On the one and successful time I decided to try it out, I discovered that I had a tonne of unfiltered analogue channels.

If it weren't for my HDTV, I probably would have taken advantage of this by now.

I soldered my phone line to my coax input and get playboy channel FREE!

Also, i removed a coax connector from my old cable box and modified it to put it in my pci express slot.  now i have internet without even having a cable modem.  my internet is uncapped and i can go to any site for free including ones that require PASSWORDS!  all you need is an empty tuna can, two twist ties off of two loaves of bread and an old banana.  make sure it has browned.

That's 2-22 more channels more than you'd get without it.

Plus T.V. is lame anyway. Fuck T.V.

I usually use a modified toaster with CB crystals.

That works as well, but what are you going to toast the two loaves of bread with if you take the crystals? Wasteful kids these days.
