In-flight mobile phone ban could become law in the U.S.

The ban on in-flight cell phone use may become permanent if a bill in the U.S. Congress gets full approval.


The proposed law is known as the HANG UP Act which is a hokey acronym for Halting Airplane Noise to Give Us Peace. It is the brainchild of an Oregon congressman named Peter DeFazio.

Anyone here been successful at making calls from the air?  I've tried before and never have much luck at it.  Even over populated areas where a lot of towers would be, I couldn't get much of a signal.  On my most recent trip I tried text messaging people, but only managed to finally get one to go through as we began our descent.  I don't see how those people in the 4th 9/11 plane were able to have conversations with their families.  I guess they were a little closer to the ground, though.

I also couldn't get my GPS tracking program to run on the plane.  I thought it'd be cool to see a GPS trail going straight across the country and to see exactly how fast we were flying.  But it wouldn't work at all.  I even had it working on the ground, before we took off and while I was sitting on the plane.  But once we got in the air, the GPS signal went away.

I called the voice bridge while over NYC a couple years ago. I was able to get calls out on my old AT&T TDMA phone in 2002 as well, like over non-populated areas, like over Indiana or whatever.
