International Music Score Library Project
« on: October 14, 2008, 09:45:52 PM »
I doubt anyone but myself is interested in this, but here goes:

The International Music Score Library Project is site and community devoted to taking printed music within the legal public domain and making it available to users for easier dissemination and appreciation. The rationale behind the project is that publishing companies receive a negligible amount of their money from the sale of scores and parts, and a wider distribution of the printed music will lead to a greater appreciation and performance of music listed, which will boost royalty capital for commercial publishers and copyright holders.

As both a performer and composition student, I think this is fucking awesome. I'm releasing the next few pieces I write under the Common Creative License (which is like the GPL, but for printed work), and I've found TONS of new material for both composition study and performance that I don't think I ever would have been exposed to before, if not for this resource. Honestly, I only order music a couple of times a year, and if a piece isn't available through an American publisher (or if it's no longer in print), the piece doesn't exist to me. A project such as this keeps music from lesser-known composers alive, as they no longer rely on the strength of their publisher, or of current editors to continue revising old works for new audiences.

As I said, most readers here probably aren't interested, but I thought I'd fire away. For those of you considering a career in music, read carefully. This shit could very well change your life.

That's all. I'll read flames in a week or two.

So it's a database of Public Domain sheet music? I think there's already one of those on the web but it's not very user friendly. I always thought it would be kind of cool to have some sort of program that could read sheet music and make a midi from it. That would make finding samples from PD music a whole hell of a lot easier. Not that I'm any good at sampling.

Nope. I meant imslp.org. Different domain altogether.

Nod, this is the most comprehensive database of PD music in existence. Much of this music has not even been in print within our own lifetimes, and may have otherwise been lost.

Finale can read music score scans, and then convert to midi, but you miss a lot of the nuances implied by a composer or editor when imported as a midi instead of as printed page.

But you could get a rough idea of what it is. If it can pick up the name and allow me to listen through them to pick out one's I would actually use then that's good enough for me.

NOW I get what you mean! I thought you meant using midi audiomaps as a means for preserving out-of-print music, not as a means for locating it. [/matt-so-stupid]

Though this doesn't help for classical music (which is what the IMSLP is geared toward), I've found loops, backbeats, sound clips, etc, etc by google'ing "royalty-free music" or "ccl music" (ccl being the creative common license). You may find some shitty "pod safe" music, too, but there are tons of awesome artists out there working under a creative common license, which is geared toward free dissemination and collaboration.

Hope that helps.

I listen to some wierd and not so wierd stuff and I hear a lot of things that make me think "That'd make a killer hip-hop beat." Like "These Eyes" by The Guess who, or "Big John" by Rare Earth. I even though about sampling some old country. Tell me "The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia" wouldn't male a bad ass song. The Vickie Lawrence version too. Not that crappy remake by Reba. Not that I dislike Reba. Her version just wasn't as good as the original for me.

I can see it. I've been getting into a lot of turn of the century popular music, as well as Woodie Guthrie. Granted, I'm studying the stuff pretty hardcore this semester, so I have a reason.

Bump for relevancy.

I completely forgot about the Freesound archive: http://www.freesound.org/

You have to register, but Freesound houses samples from a WIDE variety of sources in one place. Everything is released under CCLND (Creative Commons v3, non-derivative works), and it looks like they have the database much more organized then when I used to try getting samples from it. I just re-discovered it while browsing through NitroTracker's documentation.

For those who want a database of CCL songs (non-classical) for listening, study, collaboration, etc, you can always visit http://www.ccmixter.org/, which also houses samples and full songs.

http://www.loc.gov actually surprised me with some of the stuff they have available in their music section. There's not a TON of it by any means but if you're like me and like listening to random music that's REALLY old sometimes, or even look for samples, then you might like it.

A couple of cool things I've found:

The Ghost that never walked

Gypsy Blues

I ain't had no lovin' in a long time

Durr! How did I forget the Library of Congress?

That's great for stuff now in the PD, as everyone that ever applied for a legally protected copyright has to have their work registered in the library.
