Send Free Mail?
« on: August 09, 2006, 11:39:36 AM »
Hello everyone,
I have a question. In Canada if you send a letter to someone with no stamps they return it to the sender. Why couldn't you just put the person you want it to go to as the sender then it will be sent for free. Just call them and be like hey if you get a letter with no stamps and it says return to sender open it, it is from me or something like that. I want to know if they do the same thing in the US. I am going to try it... but it would be so cool if it worked because you could send small things for free... Someone get back to me on this...

Andrew

I have always thought of that, but if they get multiple "from" the same address or multiple letters recived at one post office, but the return address is not in that area, then they would catch on pretty fast.

They probably would catch on fast but 1 or 2 things every so often is not so bad. I wonder what would happen if I sent it from Canada to the states.

I tried this a few times in the late 80's.  In one case I had them deliver the letter but they knocked on the person's door and asked them for money for the postage due.  In another case, they sent my friend a letter warning them about committing mail fraud.  I guess they noticed that the return address was in a different zip code than I was mailing it from.  And the TO address was in the zip code that I was mailing from.  If that makes any sense.

I also tried gluing business reply card "postage paid" things to my envelopes.  But that never worked.

I read a text file once that suggested coating the face of your stamp with Elmers glue.  So when you receive the letter, you peel the glue off and the stamp is still uncanceled.  That seems like a lot of effort and risk, though, just to save a stamp.  I think the best way to screw the post office is to use email.

This worked in the 1970's when Abbie Hoffman wrote about it in Steal This Book.

Three and a half decades later, the post office have certainly caught on.

I think the best way to screw the post office is to use email.

Honestly. It's almost 2007... who uses the USPS for communication anymore? It should be limited to sending packages and payments.

....
I read a text file once that suggested coating the face of your stamp with Elmers glue.

I managed to get the business reply thing to work a couple of times, but it's mostly useless because it has to be sent from the town that is listed on its permit.  Could be good if you're trying to get back at a local organization, but not exactly the best for sending letters to friends  ;)

I think the elmer's glue thing is a lot of work for not a lot of return.  Maybe if you got one of those $2 stamps and just re-used it over and over again with friends who would peel off the gunk -- scratch that, still a bad idea.  I think that even forgery would be slighty less of a pain in the ass (still wouldn't save you anything though).

I've sent things that had a different from address than the town I was in (because I was travelling), maybe that usps worker was just really gung ho or something, or maybe they were just a dick.  Once I tried to send a package that had insuficient postage (I didn't know) and they somehow managed to get my work number!  That was freaky and really embarrassing hehe.

Just say it's from the FBI and an emergency. No one will question why an emergency is going snailmail.
