Beige boxing questions, yup.
« on: August 03, 2009, 07:35:03 AM »
Although i'm sure that what i've learned from 8-year old text documents is good enough (i sure can't seem to find any construction and use references that AREN'T less than 8 years old), i have some questions on using my Beige Box:

1. Will those 2-3 foot tall Ameritech (Damnit, AT&T! update the labels!) boxes i see laying around everywhere  work for beige boxing? i can't seem to find the phone boxes on the sides of houses the docs are always talking about but those 2-3 foot tall utility things are everywhere, and seem to have the sort of bolts you'd attach a beige box to inside them.

2. Is there any really good phreaking resources that aren't 8+ year old .TXT documents?

There are tons of 'updated' instructions on how to make a beige box but they all basically say the same thing as the 8 year old texts.

And the 2-3 foot tall boxes you see will work, just make sure to have wire strippers with you.

I've looked everywhere, but I can't find a TNI that requires you to use alligator clips, all the ones I find you just jack-in using a phone jack.

Isn't that better though?  You don't have to mod your phone wire.

eh? aw, crap. the cord on my beige box can't be changed out for a new one. i guess i'll have to go buy another Trimline.

EDIT: i should mention that phone box i stole the ameritech label from was already unlocked and that when i looked in it there were little bolts/screws that it looks like i could have tapped into.

The best beige box is just an RJ11 jack with alligator clips on it.  Clip it onto a normal phone cord and you have a traditional beige box, and if you happen upon something with a normal jack just unclip it and use the phone normally.

Couldn't i just make my beige box have support for both bolts and jacks by mutilating another phone cord and attatching the gator clips to the exposed red and green wires?

You could, but then you have to carry around and fiddle with both regular and modded cords, instead of just the one normal cord plus a small jack with clips attached.

Additionally I always figured if one needed to bail suddenly, it'd be much easier to hide or ditch a tiny RJ11 jack and then suddenly be just carrying a regular phone rather than a fraud device.

No, what i meant is attatching the gator clips from the cord attatched to the phone to a few inches of phone cable ending in the jack.

That way would work of course, but it'd be a relatively clunky method I think.  That's still two cords you have to carry and clip together manually, rather than one cord with one plug-and-play adapter.  Plus, your clipped connection would be relatively weak and unreliable; you might get static or drop the call if you move around.

Actually, the opposite of that, as in you attatch the gator clips to some exposed wire on the bit of cord ending in a modular jack.

Jebus, help me....

1. In a lot of older houses the "box" is actually located in the basement, such as in mine, so unless you like climbing power poles good luck with that.

2. It's a farking beige box, if there were txt files that were 50 years old on the subject they would probably still be relevant today. It's not like the science of beige boxing has taken a drastic turn of direction in the last 8 years compared to today. So what's stopping you from making one like you describe? Even though it's all farked up I see no reason why it wouldn't work. Although I'm beginning to wonder if you have enough common sense to tell the difference between a phone box and a power box.

Please report back and let us know how it goes.

Working on chart, one moment...

This is what i'm thinking of. when i need to use the alligator clips, i'd just unclip the little bit of cable ending in a modular jack (Cable B).
