phone recordings HELP
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:11:49 PM »
Ok, I have a new job and I was asked to buy one of those radio shack multi line recorders and then download pocket voice recorder which I did.
I then plugged the recorder from RS into my modem, and the phone into the recorder and the recorder into my mic jack on the computer. I tried having someone call me a few times and I got no recording...what am I doing wrong?? :-[

I'm just being a smartass because your original post is so confusing.  I could try and help though.  Which recorder did you buy from Radio Shack?  Was it this one or something else?

And when you say you plugged it into your modem, do you mean you plugged its phone jack into your modem?  Or did you plug the audio jack into the modem?  I'm pretty sure your computer's modem shouldn't be a part of any of this.  If it's the audio jack, you should be plugging that into the "mic" jack on your computer, which you said you did.  So I'm confused about what you're doing with your modem.

I Googled this "Pocket Voice Recorder" you mentioned and it looks awful.  Only 10 minutes of recording capacity?  That doesn't make much sense.  You might want to give Audacity a try.  It's a free recording program that is small and won't limit you to just 10 minutes.  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is the link to download it.

Yes, it was that recorder. I guess I meant router?? I CLEARLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, EVER...whatever that box is. I use for cable and phone and computer! I plugged the cord from the recorder into that..and the phone jack into the recorder, the other cord from the recorder into the mic jack in the computer. I am now confusing myself.
I did see that the PVR only lasted 10 minutes but that's what they told me to download so I did..ugh

Oh, THAT modem.  I thought you meant an old dialup modem in your computer.  It sounds like you've hooked it all up correctly and it should be working.  You probably need to mess with the sound settings on your computer.  You'll want to make sure the computer is listening to sound from the "mic" jack and not the "line in" jack, if you have that option.  You can usually get to these settings by clicking on the speaker icon in your task bar or by finding it in the Control Panel.

Thank you for your help. I did everything right. All I get is static. I hate it when things screw up like this. It sounded so simple too. Oh well, I'll figure it out.
Thanks again.

For most people it's a lot easier to record things to a digital audio recorder than a computer.  I got one at Target a couple years ago that will store a couple of hours on it in mp3 format.  It's got USB, so I can transfer the mp3 files onto my computer.

Okay, I'll try to be helpful. What color audio jack did you plug in the audio plug into?

Also, right click on your sound icon and select properties. Then properties again. Then select "Recording" then see what's checked off as the input device. Tell us what's listed.
