In my personal opinion "Freedom" is the illusion of self control and free will, as stronger this illusion works happier the society lives, when that fails, chaos takes control...

so a man living in the woods, with no ties to the outside world... isn't free to do whatever he feels like doing within his personal niche?

might be but he's not free of taking a beer with nuggets just because he will need to interact with the rest of the society to get them...
