Sticking it to the man (skype)?
« on: January 05, 2007, 06:34:29 PM »
Has anybody figured out a way to get past the new fee for Skype usage now? I know... its only 15$ and is pretty reasonable for unlimited calls... but I'm a cheap ass. (And that could be 15$ being donated to the PLA instead)

It is still free to call toll free numbers from skype, and you don't need any minutes for it or anything, so maybe that could be a loophole? I could use the Free411 number to call locations I guess, but I'm mainly concerned with being able to get onto the bridge.
Anybody know of a way to get forwarded to the bridge number through some toll free number?

If not then I'll just have to give in to the 15$ before it gets jacked up to 30. :(

A little social engineering goes a long way.

I was thinking of making a Skype user that was subscribed to skyout and then people could call the user, it would automatically connect and then you would be able to tell it what skypeout call to add to the conference call. This way I would only have to pay once, but multiple people could use it(just not at the same time).

Yeah I had a similar idea... I think. Basically just getting one that has a skypeout paid for, then conference them in.  But then that would kind of be mooching off of the person who actually dished out the money for it...
But still there'd be the task of actually finding the person to conference you in.

Me and some guys I know are currently working on trying to reverse engineer skype so that locally, it believes it has the right to connect call for you. So unless there is some remote authentication on the skype servers, (and we don't think there is) then we might be able to change the program to work like that [give free calls again]. I will post the files if we manage to get a breakthrough. In the meantime, you could use gizmo, its five free calls, so use those five, then make a new account! simple!

Sounds good. That would be pretty badass if you guys can get it to work.

Never heard of Gizmo, but I'll have to check it out

I have set up a Jajah account with the bridge number as well as the podcast voicemail. I plan to keep it active, so any of you can just sign up to http://www.jajah.com/ and use it to make free calls to the bridge.

Hi all ...my 1st post so go easy on me

I went out and bought a visa gift card for $30 (paid in cash at walgreens) and registered it online @ gift2go (dot net). Says you can use it online to buy things if you register it. How ever I have had no luck with skype. It keeps Denying it :( Any one else try this ?

The gift card type of credit cards have either no address or an unknown address and name associated with them, so most on-line retailers will either not accept them or will have to manually approve your order.

It worked for me when I signed up for a porn site. Just use someone else's address and it should work.

hey Guys

Okay with my paranoid state I finally figured out how it works to get skype to work with out having a credit card. By no means am I telling you to go out and do this as I dont know the legality of it.

Go to your local Gas station or Walgreen's etc ...buy those prepaid visa credit/debit cards. WATCH OUT ! because some of them do not include a card you are just buying a piece of paper. With these you have to call in to an 800 number and they send you a debit card with ur name and CC number CVS number etc. EWW who wants to do that. the other cards include a regular VISA/AE credit card, these come in denominations of $30, $50 and $100 at least that is what the Walgreen's has. Be sure to pay with Cash ! ( yes I am that paranoid) any way you come home go to the website i talked about to register your card, so you can make online purchases. Next go to PayPal and sign up for an account and add your new CC/DC for your paypal. Once its in  go to your skype account and pay via pay pal ! simple as that :)

Those of us who dont have a credit card or do but its under your parents account can easily get around to getting $33.95 (that includes tax) by selling back a few CD's or asking our parents ( excuse can be use it for Itunes )

Any way sorry this n00blet posted something but I had goten to the the point of frustration with over 15 rejections from Skype on trying to just use my gift card. Now my paypal account has some money in it and my credit card has a few bucks in it. if some one was to try to get in to it well the junk addressed used in all places wont lead them any where. And as far as big brother goes ...well I made a legal transaction ...at least I think. If not I know I can afford $15 but why give paypal or skype my real name and address.

One might think you're planning to do something very illegal through that skype account... or you are just indeed one paranoid fella, haha.

Meh... hopefully I'll get around to getting my gift card for it on Tuesday, then I'll proceed to do as you did.

Well, you're wrong, and there is something that goes on between your computer (your skype account) and skype, obviously they have to work that way so they can deduct credit from user's accounts.

iCall is free but it performs poorly.

Almost glad I didn't give into the 15$s for Skype... now that I work I wouldn't even have much time for the bridge anyhow. Still no way I'd ever pay 30$ for it now even that I have a job and am making some money to put food on my family.
