Does the dead baby method of ID falsification still work?

The one where you carry a dead baby around and say, This is my ID? I hope so.

The more it is rotted, the more believable it is. I did a study with about 50 babies, the fresher ones always raised suspicion.

?? What's the difference between a sack of dead babies and a surfboard?

A: I don't have a surfboard in my closet!

What was this originally anyway, you pick up a SSN from a SIDS?  Wow I didn't realize you can apply as a corollary to the birth cerificate.  I guess the anchorbabies aren't the only ones that WANT ONE.  Times, they have changed...

On a more serious note, does anybody know if they check for death certificates now when one applies for a passport with a birth certificate now?

I recommend the following book

http://www.amazon.com/New-I-D-America/dp/0873642600

It's an old book but lots of the basics are covered.

Whether they check for one's death first or only under special circumstances (as in they don't believe you are who you say you are) is unknown.  Having said that, never underestimate the incompetence of the government.

The most recent book I have ('98) warns that this technique is waning, and that was pre-9/11. The specific issues it cited is continuing computerization and cross-referencing of records and the risk that another like-minded person will pick the same dead baby as you.

In the US, especially so in the finance industry, many companies are now making it a requirement that before any type of acceptance, your social security number is checked with the SSDI. I don't know what it is like in any other country.

Also consider, as said above, terrorism has placed many countries in a high security status, I'm sure a lot of the material provided in that book is no longer valid. I'm sure procedures have changed. I would hope so anyway.
