I'm assembling my first computer in years and it seems either time or extensive recreational drug use has wiped my memory of certain essential bits of information. I think I've hooked everything up fine except for the front panel. Is white (on the orange/white and green/white combos) positive or negative? When I push the power button nothing happens, but when it is released the hard drive LED flashes and the fan starts, then stops. I think either the switch is broken somehow or I've got the polarity wrong. Any suggestions?

With the power switches, it really doesn't matter which way you connect the case connection to the front panel mobo pins as all you are doing is completing a circuit.

How long does the computer stay on for when you release the power button?

you know what i do at weak-net?  i take a fuckin screw driver and find the two leads that make the power coming from the (usually the bottom right) mobo.  If you hit the right leads togther with it plugged in it will turn on.  also, if drugs have messed you up that bad, you may have the mobo in upside down or potentially backwards, check to make sure the huge pink parallel ports, USB ports and such are facing the back side of the case.  and if thats the case, then buy a new case or encase the case in a bigger case. case closed. heh.

naw, once you find the leads hook and "push button" switch up to it.  or make a remote starter from some IR LEDs from radio shack xD

Dude, something VERY Similar happened to me, turns out the motherboard was pressing up against the back of the case, causing a short on boot.

Check your spacers, and possibly remount the mobo with some insulator behind it.

Hey I just noticed that some of my mounting screws have little grommets or washers on them...maybe that's the cause of the short? I figured that the board's traces must have some sort of plastic on top or they'd short out a lot easier than that though...

Normally I'm ruthless with the banning stick (Ask anyone on LetsBeef.com and they'll tell you.) but I don't have the power on this board. SMF doesn't give moderators banning permissions by default like VBullitin does. He does need to be banned for a couple days at least. Him and undercoverfed both. If I could do it I would. Maybe murd0c will do it though.

The fact that the power button does something probably means its plugged in right. In the same assembly there are outputs for LED's and reset button. Maybe you have it plugged into the reset? But I still think there is a chance the back of the motherboard is touching somewhere. Building custom PC's is awesome though, one of my favorite activities

unplug the HDD and then use a screw driver to the back of the Powersupply and move the little red switch from 120 to 215 ad then back again.  Then, unplug the ATX (rectangular) power supply from the MoBo itself.  then plug everything back in except the HDD, and try to turn it on.  Take all the components out, even the RAM, see what the problem is that way.  Hope this helps, I thought you didn see anything happen when you hit the switch. good luck, make the 1337 be with ye. - trev.

I'll try your suggestions in a little bit, thanks everyone who offered advice/encouragement! Also, I couldn't figure out where to mount the hard drive. I've always seen it in the stack with the other drives in the top hand corner of the case, but I can't seem to make the holes line up. I settled for sitting it gently in there and screwing one of the screws in to moderately secure it.

The case is fairly old (the brand new MOBO fits and everything else is dandy) but that doesn't seem to make teh sense because hard drives don't seem to have gotten smaller in the past half-decade at least. I hope my own stupidity is to blame here, because I actually went and gave that case a custom paint job back in the summer that I'm reasonable happy with.

I honestly wasn't trying to be an asshole. I like Tachyon, he can come over to my hood and hard ball a female family member of his choice. We're best friends. I know his SSN, and DOB and his favorite color. My point is / was that people who can't or are too lazy to type out words such as 'motherboard' are mental vegetarians and are using ancient vocabulary that only the guy from Computer Renaissance uses anymore to describe a piece of computer equipment. Whether or not the person in question decides to be a real fucking awesome human being or not by calling the duck a duck when he sees a duck instead of calling it a dck is entirely up to him. Murdoc doesn't need to ban me, I'm the only person on these forums that offers any bit of true entertainment or life-enriching advice. I'm like an episode of Simpsons. I make little sense at times and the message is skewed, but the moral of the story is always positive.
