Beavis and Butt-Head, especially the part when they watched MTV.

oh yes.  Beavis and Butt-Head was, and still is, the greatest show ever.  i was a little late getting into it...i didn't get into it near the end of its run, when i was thirteen or fourteen.  i like the videos, although i think i liked the episodes better.

my favourite episodes were always the ones in which Beavis turned into Cornholio...that still makes me laugh so hard.

does everyone else remember Butt Bowl?  that was my favourite part of Super Bowl Sunday...turn off the stupid, bombastic halftime show, flip to MTV, and watch some B&B.  my favourite episode ever, the one in which Beavis gets deported, was on the very last Butt Bowl in 1997.

- My dad's head exploding upon the sight of Boy George  ;D

It was weird how accepted he was by kids back then.  I mean, kids dressed up like him for Halloween and nobody thought anything of it.  I don't think anyone even considered that he might be gay.  Remember a country song called "Where's The Dress?" about Boy George?  Remember kids wearing one white glove and moonwalking everywhere because they idolized Michael Jackson?

- Punching half holes in 5.25" floppies to make them double sided

What was up with that anyway?  I never understood why companies didn't just put a hole on both sides of the disk for us in the first place.

Remember the original Nintendo that came with that stupid robot?  There was only a couple games that you could play with the robot and they both sucked.

Sell twice as many disks?

i remember saving up all my money when i was little and buying a power glove.

i was angry and disappointed when it didn't work as smoothly as i hoped it would...but i always felt so cool wearing it.  i also felt really cool because i could prohibit my younger siblings from using it, since i had spent my own money on it.  it was mine...and even though we had to share the video game system, i was the only one who got to wear the cool glove on my hand.

I also have a few of the original Gameboys. Large, grey, awkward things that I still love and use now.

Remember learning the Thriller dance and the premiere of the video on MTV?

Have you seen 13 Going on 30? (I know you have. It's ok. There's no shame in men watching chick flicks.  ;D) It's a must-see for any 80's enthusiast. (For those who haven't seen it... On her 13th birthday, a girl wishes to be 30. Her wish is granted and she is aged physically but not mentally. Hilarity ensues.) Anyway, there's a scene where a party is bombing and she remedies the situation by playing Thriller and people natch join her in the Thriller dance.

BTW, if you use the /dance command with your dark elf in the MMORPG Guild Wars, it will do the Thriller dance. (Also, there's a quest named For Great Justice.)

What was up with that anyway?  I never understood why companies didn't just put a hole on both sides of the disk for us in the first place.

I know, right? It wasn't as if it was a big secret or anything.

Vaguely...

Remember that Mr. Game Show toy. It was so obnoxious... I loved it.

All the cable channels that we didn't pay for had the pictures scrambled, but you could still listen to them.  This included the porn channel.
Then I guess I would have to say I remember cable descramblers! And..gas being like 93 cents a gallon...

I was only around for little bits of the 80's, but I remember some great memories.

1) Nintendo. My brother and I got our Nintendo when I was 4 or 5, which means we didn't get it until the early 90s. We rocked that thing out until it broke, however (it actually lasted longer than our SNES) and I just replaced it with a toploader. I had, until about 3 weeks ago, a working Power Pad, but then I left it in the garage and it was eaten by mice :-(. When we were kids, though, we would stay up and play video games all night when my parents had to work late (which was usually till 3 or 4 in the morning)

2) Vinyl and Cassette tapes. In my house, we had 3 turntables, and 2 of them were off-limits. I had vinyl, but I was only allowed to use my turntable (which I bought at a pawn shop). My stylus broke easily, and the things were pretty expensive. If I really wanted to listen to my music collection when I was walking around, I had to copy my records onto a cassette tape and listen to it on an enormous Walkman. It ate tapes, used batteries like mad, and all my headphones looked dorky as hell. There was no looking cool with that thing on. That one actually sort of floors me, because the Walkman was not a status symbol like the iPod. People didn't feel the need to listen to their music all the time.

3) Betamax. There's not too much to be said about Beta and VHS, but I remember buying, like, 150 movies for $10 from a video store after they went out of business because they didn't want to migrate over to VHS. That was how I got exposed to some great late 80's, early 90's movies like Cloak and Dagger. My parents got rid of the Beta collection before I was able to move out with them, but that's okay - it's so hard to find working Betamaxes people are willing to part with.

4) "Boys will be Boys". When I was a kid, my brother and our next door neighbor thought it would be funny to sit at the park and peg people with a BB gun as they walked past. My cousin did the same thing a month ago and was arrested, criminally charged, and expelled from school. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been punished, but seeing the difference between those 15-16 years is ridiculous. The cultural views regarding actual violence, simulated violence, and "pranks" have changed so much because so many are afraid that every immature kid will be the next Columbine shooter.

- I remember:

- buying cigarettes for 85 cents a pack for Mom - this actually coold have been the late 70's though

-  the old Cable converter boxes and the scrambled channels. We were the first people in our neighborhood to get cable, when you wrapped aluminum foil around the cable to the TV, you magically unscrambled them!

- HBO going "off the air" for the night!

- the day MTV started!

- Dad hand me a dollar and a 1 gallon gas can, I'd come home with a gallon of gas and a candy bar.

- Smoking being permitted everywhere. My gym teacher even smoked in the locker room office.

- not having cartoon network! we only watched cartoons on Saturday mornings!

- dialling up all sorts of BBS's on my 300 baud modem! then thinking I was hot shit when I got my 1200 bps modem cuz it was 4X the speed!!!

- buying Converse All Star Chuck Taylors for $12

- I got my drivers license in 1987 and drove a 1976 Datsun B210 with 240,000 miles on it. 10 bucks would fill the tank and I could drive around for a week!!

Thise are just a few items!
