I called a convenience store once and got the guy to unplug his credit card machine and set it on the counter behind him, to protect it from an airborne computer virus.  I never considered anyone would be stupid enough to cut wires, though.

I got a clerk to unplug his register last night by telling him I was with corporate and that we were having trouble getting the information off the network from it. He plugged it back in after I had him holding the plug in his hand for like five minutes but it was still entertaining.

I used to make clerks unplug their credit card machines because of "the virus."  I never even considered the possibility of getting a clerk to CUT the wires on a credit card machine, though.

I can't think of a legitimate excuse to get them to cut the wires when just unplugging it would suffice. It would have to be some kind of super virus that could still infect it while it was turned off I guess.

Well it worked on the Wal-Mart lady and it's worked on a motel guy.  Convenience store guys can't be too much smarter than Wal-Mart employees.  Back when I was messing with convenience store guys, I had them set the credit card machine on the other counter, away from the phone lines, because the credit card virus was airborn.  I think they'll believe more than you'd think they would.
