While I was out at my local Wal-Mart I came across their Vonage display and decided I would give it a shot.
I get a free month of service with activation, unlimited calls, and a $50 Wal-Mart gift card with activation.
I went to the front counter and quickly paid cash and brought my new toy home.
I decided that I would see how dificult it would be to dismantel the Vonage device and just return the empty shell,
much like ive done to several routers in the past.
When I got home I grabbed my screwdriver and took the device apart. Only 4 screws secured the
tiny circut board inside its case. I placed the board in a temporary home consiting of a box with a hole cut out to
accomodate the power, ethernet, and phone lines.
When I took out the guts of the Vonage device it left 3 holes where the power supply, the 2 telephone lines
and the ethernet cable were. There would be no way I could return this to walmart without them noticing the voids, so
I decided to fill them. I grabbed some parts from a couple junk computers I had in the closet. I ripped out a 56K
modem and a Ethernet card and tore off their jacks to use to fill the voids. I then shaved off the round edges of some
little round bit I found on the 56K modem to use for the Power slot.
When I was finished installing the parts, I covered everything with electrical tape so you could not see into the device
and used some cardboard to help support the parts while the glue dried.
The device still didnt have the right weight to it. I needed something lightweight and wouldnt rattle around inside
if inspected.
I couldnt find anything that would work, either things were too heavy, not large enough, or too tall. I then noticed my
turkey sammich sitting next to me. I picked it up and weighed it in my hand. I was just right.
I placed the case over my sammich and cut out the outline in it. Then took a couple bites to make room for the
jacks.
Imagine the surprise on the persons face who opens up the case and finds part of a sandwhich inside.
Hopefully this person has a sense of humor. I inclued a couple PLA buttons for good measure. Maybe this person will
like them.
I returned my Vonage device and got all my money back no problem, and 4 to 6 weeks Ill be receiving my $50 gift card
in the mail. The activation for vonage was $30 so Ill be making $20 from all this. Not too bad....
