PLA Ham Radio net?
« on: September 18, 2008, 06:22:27 AM »
Any ham who is in the PLA might want to have an HF or VHF net to just get together on the air. Kind of like an extension of the phone bridge. It could be called "PLA net" or "Phone Losers Net".............. OK Baaaad idea?!?!

Sounds like a neat idea.  If you can organize it, I can set up an announcement for other people to join in.  I know there's at least a couple people on here who are into ham radio.

Thanks Brad. I guess we would have to find out the following:

1) Who has a license (no, ya can't scam your way into this one....)

2)Frequencies to use

3)Formal or informal. Such as PLA members only for the first 1/2 hour and then open it up to other hams with intrest.

4) If you have a license, you could be control operator (sort of like a radio mod) and take checkins and then start the conversation.

5)Local PLA's (state orgs) could have a local net on 2 Meters (VHF) in their respective states since it is on a more local level.

6) Have Fun! I really think that it would "take off" because of the subject matter and intrest it would generate.
7) Get a license, dammit!!!! There is no more code requirement and it is really easy to get nowadays. I got my Extra through the Bash study system and it was a piece of cake! (Do a search for Dick Bash, KL7IHP to get some backround)
I will do my best to come up with frequencies, etc. But I need feedback. If you would like to at least give it a try, I'm game.

Or CACTUS net!

Do they really take action against people who operate radios without licenses? I'm sure none of the five people in my city who have one will be able to find me.

Well, you would need a call sign like WB2GMN, or KK7CU to ID with on the air. If you used someone elses call sign, monitors would catch it from the FCC and you would be in a world of shit. So, like I said, get a license. It's not that hard to do and no morse code is required anymore. Besides, it's all about the fun, isnt it?

In that vein, how exactly would an interested party "track down" a person who was transmitting via HAM illegally?

They could triangulate the signal and just look for the antenna.

Haven't you seen Pump Up The Volume?  They drive circles around your neighborhood in giant yellow FCC vans.

Now that you mention it I bought it out of a bargain DVD bin somewhere a long time ago and never watched it.

So they actually waste the resources it takes to do this?

That settles it- Xtian Slater film festival at my place this weekend.

Also showing: Kuffs, Mobsters and Very Bad Things.

I tried to get this going a few months ago...never really took off.

Are you proposing doing this via irlp or echoink? There would be no "local level" for me since im the only PLA member in Reno with a license.

And Tachyon: yes, it is extremely easy to find someone operating illegally. Just from signal reports from various hams who are stationary we could find the general location. We tracked down one guy who was using our auto patch to dial 911. Took us 45 min.

No I realize obviously through triangulation and so forth it should be easy to find a radio transmitter, I'm just wondering if anybody would bother.

Hams would bother.  Besides protecting the frequencies that they care about, it'd probably just be a fun challenge, tracking down a troublemaker.  I've heard about it happening a lot.  CB radio users used to do it too.  Radio hobbyists have lots of free time.

Operate from your car. Or better yet, hide behind somebody else's house with your HT and operate.

WE've had people jamming our repeaters while mobile. Thats the toughest. I dont think we've ever caught one who was doing it that way. Being in a downtown area can help when trying to evade them as well. The reflection of the signal bouncing off of buildings can give false readings.

Kind of like the "81's" of the airwaves UFW1UFWA!!!

Well, I will try to setup something of HF, maybe 75 phone and see how it goes. If it goes nowhere, than so be it. Echolink or IRLP maybe but we'll see how the initial lukewarm response will be... . . . . .   . . . .
