Geocaching Cactus
« on: November 16, 2008, 09:32:44 PM »
I'm into Geocaching and I've been wanting to unleash a travelbug unto the world for quite awhile now.  A travelbug is an item you put into a cache which other Geocachers take and put into other caches, then they log it on the website with a tracking number so you can see where your travelbug ends up.  Some of them just drift around a state forever and others end up going around the world.

I've decided that the perfect travelbug would be some kind of cactus character.  Maybe a plush toy or something made of plastic.  In the description, I'm going to request that this cactus character have his picture taken in front of as many pay phones as possible.  Maybe he'll make it to another country for pay phone pictures.

I've been searching Ebay and the only plush cactus is Hello Kitty, which is stupid and expensive.  There's also the cactus antenna topper, but it seems like that would come apart too easily.  Same with all the glass figurines.  If anyone can find some kind of toy cactus, preferably a character of some kind and hopefully cheap, post it here.

Is there any limit on size?

I only asked because at The Last Hope, we had major success with an inflatable cactus that Rob got for two bucks, I think.

Yeah, it can't be any bigger than maybe 6 inches (That's what she said!  Sorry - too much The Office) and needs to be able to fit into various tupperware containers with a bunch of other junk.  About the size of a small beanie baby would be perfect.  I scrolled through about 1,000 listings on Ebay yesterday and found nothing.  I think I'm going to end up just picking a random beanie baby from my kids to use because finding a cactus is seeming pretty hopeless.  It'll still be a cool way to get pictures of pay phones.

Here's one:

It looks more like a stuffed alien fetus than a cactus, though.

You should tell them to make sure the pictures include the little tag with the phones number on it.

This one would be perfect. But you have to order at least 150 of them.

I just ordered a free sample of that one.  I should have it in 10 days or less.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Some sales guy from that company actually called me and asked me a bunch of questions about who my demographic was, what my website was about, etc.  It was annoying.  He said he'd send me some other cactus-themed samples though.

So did you give him the straight dope about the PLA website or feed him a bunch of BS?

I didn't lie to him, but I didn't go into detail about PLA.  I just told him I ran a website and the cactus was the mascot or something like that.  I can't wait for his followup call next week where he asks how I liked the samples.

Those are awesome, but damn, a buck for each cactus lollipop is a bit steep.

Geocaching is lots of fun.  It helps you find places in your city that you never knew existed.  And sometimes you find cool stuff in the caches.
