Private Investigators
« on: September 03, 2006, 09:01:07 AM »
As I am in my last years of high school I am starting to think of a good carrer to get started in.  I've thought about getting into computers, but computer literate people come a dime a dozen now so not that much money would be involved.  I've thought about being a operator or a lineman but they get paid shit.  I'm trying to think of a job that gets paid at least $55,000 a year.

After listening to episode 2 and 8, I've tried and accomplished every meathod of Social Engeneering RBCP has talked about and I have tried and accomplished new ones.  All of last week I was on an Island with some of my friends and they kept getting prank calls from a weird number.  One of them was all like "I'm so leet, I will call 411 and have them do a reverse lookup on the number".  He did and it was a cell phone number so no luck.  I thought I would try calling sprint (the phone company) and getting it out of them.  I did.  We didn't do much with the information but it was kinda cool.  Then they had me look up phone numbers of people they hated, out of 7 I got 5 of them.  Then the next day I decided why not make the people pay.  I told them that I would look up names, numbers, and addresses for $5.  We got other people to do busisness with, and I made $25.  I thought, wow, this would be cool to do professionally.  Then it hit me!  I should be a Private Investigator.

When I got home I googled Private Investigator to get some information on the job.  I wikipedia artical told me that they got paid only about $30,000 a year.  But others claimed that it was between $40,000 - $80,000.  I'm sure somebody here knows a PI or has wanted to be one.  Does anybody know about how much they make?

Look up some local PIs, call them up, explain your situation and maybe they'll let you intern with them.  Don't expect to make $30,000 straight out of high school.  I don't think there's a set amount of money that a PI makes.  It all depends on how good they are with skills and marketing.

Also, aren't you going to college?

Some states also require you to get a licence and training process.

Also z09, weren't you the one who whined to RBCP and he created PLA Radio ep8 for "all you z09s out there"?

Im not so sure about your computer savvy people coming a dime a dozen. I get calls pretty much every other day asking how to fix something on their computer. They whine about how slow its going and how messed up it is. Then you look at myspace and see how multiple people have viruses spamming myspace messages and or phishing buletins. If you havent noticed yet pretty much every one now adays uses computers and portion of us are tech savvy. People who are not are downloading viruses, spyware and just ruining their computer.

People like them need people like us to fix their computers... for a fee that is. The beauty of it is that no matter what software you put on there to help them keep malware away after you fix their computer chances are they will find a way to mess it up again. So you will have the same people coming back to you every six months if that.

It really depends on where you live.  In Seattle or LA computer people are a dime a dozen but in Birmingham Alabama maybe not so much.  Cisco networks will make you huge money.  Get yourself a CCIE and you will be guaranteed not to make under $100K and that is with no college.  Good stuff.

The intern idea is a great way to show them your serious. I know that the laws hhave changed a lot in the last few years and the money isn't there like it used to be. It will all depend on what type of place you work for, ie how large of a company are they. You can't be the experience you will get though if you do try it out!

Good luck!

You can't beat the experience you will get, though, if you do try it out!

Fixed.

You have pretty big ambitions as far as money is concerned for when you exit high school.  After high school I went off to college and earned my Bachelor's in Computer Science, then earned my Master's in Information Technology.  The point is - get educated, either by yourself or through the norms of college.

I'm glad you took the time to state the point, because I did not get that out of it.

That's understandable coming from a person who doesn't question.  Try ASKING where I am coming from then perhaps you may have a different interpretation.  Maybe?  Hopefully?

It sure couldn't hurt your efforts.

You just need to get over your utter fear of polite gay employees and you'll be fine.

By the way, before you think you're going to have a long-lasting career selling phone records, you should know that the last I heard, congress was in the middle of trying to pass a bill making it illegal to sell phone information.  The bill disappeared for awhile but I'm pretty sure it's back now.  Here's and article about it and there's plenty more on Google.

They seem to be concentrating mostly on companies that sell actual toll records of customers.  But I can see them putting a halt to selling basic name and address info too.  The last time this happened was back in 2000 when they passed a law banning the sale of banking records.  Soon after, they went after phone records too, but that never seemed to go anywhere.  Looks like it could happen this time, though.
