716-837-9901 - Payphone outside of the Buffalo KMart. Accepts incoming calls. I had fun with this one for a while.
716-836-9023 - Salvation Army payphone. Apparently this was the store's main number, but they were recieving harassing calls and the number was used on the payphone instead. The payphone rings constantly when you walk in.
716-836-9076 - Convience store payphone. For some reason this one only accepts calls 10% of the time.
716-837-4966 - Payphone in some sort of Medical place. An employee always answers it as if it were the company's line. Coincidentally, 837-4966 spells out Verizon, and the number is a Verizon line.

The "fax thing" is for i believe firmware/software updates. after X rings if no-one picks up it defaults to it. I could be very wrong though. But Every payphone i have called does it.

That loud tone is a modem inside. The owner of the phone will have special software to log onto the phone, and increase or decrease the amount needed to make a phone call etc.... There are other things that can be done as well. The modem inside is very slow though, if I remember right it is 1200 baud or less.

i know all the Greyhound Station ones were COCOTs [well, not coin operated, you could only use calling cards or credit cars, but you know what i mean.]
i am almost 100% sure that the truck stop ones were COCOTs too, but not quite. they still took coins, though.

I say this because I've had this happen with several retail stores I've attempted to call after hour. I'm not really sure what that "screeching" is, but it's definitely not a fax, and I've only had it happen on standard phone lines (as opposed to POTs lines)

Most of the payphones in my area of Chicago (that I have found anyways) don't accept calls either, exceptions being the greyhound station.
My ass has fallen off due to laughter. @ Duncan. One of the best victim boards out there. Poor guy has been called so much, you'd think he would change his number.

he has changed his number before, 2 or 3 times if I remember. It's now a 1-800 number and don't accept blocked ID's.

Payphones at Quiktrip gas stations/convenience stores. They Ring at least once, usually about 3 or 4 times but they seem to ring only once at from about 11:30 PM-6 AM.

The Portland (Oregon) airport has a TON of payphones that all accept incoming calls and ring loudly. I got some of their numbers, mainly the ones in the baggage claim area (there is a cluster for 4 phones every 10 to 20 feet at baggage claim). I'll probably add to this list with ones from other places in the airport. If you go to the Google Doc you can export it as a CSV which can then be imported into a service like Phonevite [http://www.phonevite.com (http://www.phonevite.com)] which will then call ALL of the phones at the same time. The few TSA guys who were there ran around trying to pick them all up when I first did that (but that was like a year ago so they won't remember).

Most of those only ring once, except for those at DFW, find some that ring more than once

The ones at the bus station also ring partially.. it shows that it is ring on the screen but doesn't actually physically ring but the good thing is that the bus station is packed with people even at 2 and 3am in the morning. So far most of the payphones I have seen around here are COCOTS that ring only a few times but I have been keeping my eyes open for phones that ring in.

These ring about 4 or 5 times. They are located next to the men's bathroom in the hallway between the convenience store and McDonalds. The McDonalds has free WiFi, if you are ever passing through on I35 and have a of time, you might want to try calling these phones on Skype with the McDonalds Free WiFi.

the project that I have been working on at trainphones.nyphonejacks.com (http://trainphones.nyphonejacks.com) i have ANIed most of the phones to obtain their numbers - and have done test calls to the phones... and a good portion of them claim to be not in service when you call into them... so i do not think that getting a NIS recording means that the phone is actually NIS...
have not added much to it because i have usually end up in most of the same subway stations, and when i am in other stations, usually am in too much of a rush to get images of the payphones, and document their numbers...

Speaking of payphones, it's a shame to see another one bite the dust, the last surviving one in the Port Charlotte Town Center Mall. Even though the COCOTS company that owned it is a rip off; they charged 15.00 to my credit card for a one minute call when I lost my cell phone.
