How is it that if law enforcement can trace skype calls, that Dex (former leader of pranknet) was not caught through such a method? How is it that a New York online newspaper tracked down Dex when federal and state law enforcement agencies could not? And why isn't his @55 locked up by now? I don't mean to annoy people, and I apologize for my ignorance. I only hope to have these burning questions resolved.

Y'know, I think the things he does are humiliating and ignorant. I almost feel for these people. But for some reason, there's no shortage of idiots to plague in this fashion. Arresting Dex is like arresting Batman.
You'd be arresting someone whom was just trying to help.
They should arrest people whom believe someone when they say that the concentration of urine is lost when you put it into a container. And the people whom believe someone when they say that the alarms only deactivate if you break windows.
These people are a danger to themselves and others. Dex is only a danger to the ones in danger of themselves.

If what is on the internet being reported is true, than the FBI would need to put together a solid case before trying to extradite Dex to America. American authorities will have to make arrangements with the Canadian Government to transfer him to America for criminal trial. You gotta remember, there are some gray areas in all of this. In a court of law, Dex's defense attorney will ask, "How many windows did you break? How many alarms did you pull? How sprinkler systems did you set off"? and Dex's answer will be "none". Dex never physically did any of the damage. There may actually be a big difference between going into a movie theater and screaming fire and calling someone at a hotel and telling them to break a window, pull an alarm, or set off a fire sprinkler. Of course, the FBI may just be taking their time putting together a solid case as they can pick up Dex anytime they feel like it now. Putting a 25 year old kid in prison for making prank phone calls may not be the best use of FBI resources. The FBI might just have bigger fish to fry. TSG got these guys to respond to emails, so maybe that gave TSG their IP addresses. It's not that hard to track someone down from their static IP address.
Also, do we really need this many Dex threads? Couldn't this question just have been added to an existing Dex thread?

Sorry man; I didn't mean to add to the flood of Dex-related posts. I was only curious as to why someone that the Feds were supposedly tracking hadn't been dealt with since his identity and location are now known. I'm sorry if I seemed ignorant and I appreciate all the responses.

There is a lot of sensationalism in that article. They had to hype it up to make it more exciting and interesting for the reader. They also failed to mention that the breakage prank phone calls all ended in mid July as ORDERED by the room owner Dex. Dex does know what is right and wrong.

first of all, Fuck TSG, they are liars who want to hype everything up. how the fuck can you compare prankNET to fucking terrorists? the FBI should move on, because it's fucking stupid and makes no sense to go after dex which will only cost america more money and stress. they should be going after real fucking criminals, especially since dex has stopped doing the breaking. and second, even TSG didn't say over a million, that's an astronomical amount it was somewhere over 100,000. alot, but nothing compared to a million.

One million dollars is an easy figure for Dex to have reached. That one hotel estimated $50,000 in damages for 1 night of pranking and he's been doing nonstop destructive pranks for close to a year now. When you figure in all the lost business for hotels he's cost, all the rooms hotels have had to comp for unhappy guests, the cost of emergency services, and then the actual damage, it's easily way over 1 million. Saying it's just $100k is ridiculous.
Even if it was just $100,000, though, that's a huge amount compared bank robberies. So Dex is still many steps above what the average bank robber makes.

Uhhh first of all people have been disproving of dex's/pranknet's(whatever) calls long before the TSG article. Also other reasons why people don't like dex is because he lacks charisma. Sure he is really good at manipulating people to do weird things, but the way he does it is very rarely funny. for the first week that i joined the phone show i was trolling a forum and got them riled up enough to constantly call in and talk shit or try their hardest and fail to disrupt the show for about a month and a half. rbcp and i both got a kick at how badly they embarrassed themselves when they called in. if y'all would like to pick that up again, we'd be happy to take your calls when we restart the live show in a few weeks... we like callers, and if you want to debate with us, go for it. it'll make for a decent show perhaps.

Well I cannot speak for all the Prank Net fans who post in the forums but i know that ME, Trotfox5 and maybe Copyright where all members of the PLA before Prank Net got all over the news. It was RBCP who told us about Prank Net. So we didn't get a bunch of people together just to defend Prank Net.
And as far as I know Prank Net is not sending people here to defend Prank Net
But I just thought I would try to defend something that I love just as I would defend the PLA if people in other places where saying shit about it.
So in summary I like the PLA and I like Prank Net and yes Linear I still like you ;)

Conway - An online news magazine claims it has identified the man who heads the prank call Web site Pranknet, which may be responsible for $50,000 in phoned-in vandalism to a Conway hotel. The FBI (web) has found no violation of a federal statute and has discontinued its investigation.
In an in-depth investigation, The Smoking Gun has reported that “Dex,” the online altar ego for the man who heads up the network of pranksters, is 25-year-old Windsor, Ontario, resident Tariq Malik.
In June, an employee at a Conway hotel received a call from a man claiming to be a representative from SimplexGrinnel, the installer of the hotel’s fire sprinklers. The caller told the employee there was a problem with the sprinklers and that she needed to “reset” them by pulling the fire alarm. As the prank progressed, the caller told the woman the sprinklers would activate unless she started breaking windows, which he said contained sensors that connected to the alarm system. After the sprinklers activated, the employee believed the caller’s next claim that the entire hotel would flood unless the employee began breaking windows. Another employee and a guest got caught up in the scheme before the Conway Fire Department and police arrived and determined there was no real emergency.
A few weeks after the Conway incident, the FBI took over the investigation. However, Special Agent Steve Frasier of the FBI, said Thursday, “We looked at the allegation. There doesn’t appear to be a violation of federal law. From the information we’ve received, it may violate state law, but from what we’ve received, there was no violation of a federal statute.”

That's way less likely. If they have specific incidents they're investigating, how much more information can they really get? What are they waiting for? The calls don't involve breaking stuff anymore so it's not like they're gathering info on new crimes.

Certain types of pretexting to phone companies and banks is illegal, which is to protect privacy and prevent identity theft. But calling up a hotel and telling them random insane things shouldn't be illegal at all. Aside from a few general "phone harassment" laws, I guess. But I'm not sure how state and federal laws apply to Canadians. He might completely get away with this because of that. Not that I know anything about law, but it seems like he could.

Dex has done a lot less damage than he thought he did. A while back when I was on the chat room, they were worried that the sprinkler calls were doing millions in damage. Then they somehow guessed around 250,000, and somebody mentioned that they shouldn't do more than that to the same place.
Now Smoking Gun is saying that the sprinklers only caused $50,000. Still a lot, but far less than PrankNET suspected.
Also, a truck driver rams through the door and only causes $1000? Really?

Stealing is illegal. Apparently tricking people over the phone isn't. And in some sense, Dex didn't benefit from what he did. There was no money in it. So what should the punishment be? Should he have to pay back the hotels for the damage he caused? Maybe, but get real, there's just no way he could. Should he have to go to jail? Maybe, but then again, why? Because he told people over the phone what to do and they were dumb enough to believe him?
I'm not a Dex fanatic or anything, actually I think he should lighten up a bit, but if the FBI says the case isn't worth investigation, then it probably isn't.
I don't want Dex to get in trouble, because I'm not damn sadistic, but I also hope he stops before somebody actually gets hurt. And I hope the media also stops making a big deal out of this whole thing before congress churns out more anti-phreaking laws to make life harder for everyone else.

Wow. I feel out of the loop. There was just one thing I wanted to point out for some of the earlier trolling:
RBCP and/or the PLA have never defended the actions of any of its users when they did something stupid or out of line. There have been "pranks gone bad" or "pranks out of hand" on the bridge, which Arbie asked the users to stop, because they are stupid and harmful. We have had users in the past who have been convicted of fraud, convicted of computer crimes of various sorts, and many other transgressions. Some were just stupid personal choices, while some were pranks gone too far. We've never once defended a user's actions or stood behind them. If I were to start doing what Dex did and got caught (or at least positively ID'd), the PLA forum members would not call me a hero or flame anyone who spoke ill of me.
'jes sayin. Also, I usually don't find calls that encourage damage to property that funny, though there are exceptions.

Well, before it does let me say what a bunch of sad sacks Dex and his crew are. They completely lack any critical thinking skills. It's blind luck that no one has been seriously injured by what they think of as prime social engineering. I don't think Dex et. al. have the slightest clue what the term means.

Sorry if I came off as flaming, it really was just a genuine curiosity about the pedophile drama. I thought I'd get a link to a new article or a cool story about linear infiltrating which would be of interest and relevant to the thread. Since everyone's sick of it I'll stop.

Well PrankNet was fun and entertaining while it lasted. I knew it would not last forever. With America being a police state after 911, I knew it was only a matter of time before the technology they were using to make the calls was gonna come back and bite them in the ass. I was just reading that 4 states and 6 cities actually do want to extradite Tariq Malik from Canada to face criminal charges. Looks like PrankNET prank callers James Tyler Markle and Shawn Powell are sitting in Texas jails right now. I guess they never figured that the police would just go to Skype and get the records of the calls they made. Looks like they are gonna have a long time serving jail time to think about how they ever got mixed up in such stupid shit. Now we all know "don't mess with Texas". Will Tariq Malik dodge the bullet? I guess we will all just have to wait and see............

My friend just told me that he saw a news report about PrankNET on TV. He said they interviewed some of the people that were victims of the sprinkler calls, showed pictures of the damage done, and showed pictures of Dex.
He isn't into prank calling or anything, and everything he knows about PrankNET or Phone Losers I probably forced him to listen to told him. But he said that the reporters were being assholes the whole time. He said they kept making fun of Dex and where he lives, putting him down for living with his mom in a poor apartment with 'trashbags over the windows'. He also said the 'victims' being interviewed were overly dramatic, with the one person saying that they were 'traumatized for life' because of the sprinkler call.
Like I said, my friend isn't into pranking, but he told me that by the end of the report he felt sorry for Dex.
